Link Popularity
What is link popularity?
It is one of the methods that Google and other search engines use to rank websites in their search results. For every link to your site that
search engines find on the web, that counts as a sort of vote of confidence in the quality of your site, thereby increasing your rankings, little
by little. It's unknown how many links you need to reach #1 for a certain keyword phrase, as there is no magic number and search engines are
changing all the time, however, link popularity has become an important and required part of promoting your website.
What kind of links do I need to increase my link popularity?
There are many types of links, but here are the basics:
Good links to have:
- Links from authority sites, or well respected websites, this woud include links from education and governmental websites, respected
niche websites, respected blogs etc.
- Links from respected and established directories including Yahoo Directory, DMOZ, Business.com and many others.
- Links from social bookmarking and social networking sites.
- Links from related websites.
- Links from articles, press releases, blogs and forums.
Bad links:
There aren't really any bad incoming links to have, as the search engines know that you cannot control who links to you. Any old site
can put a link to you on their site, there's no way to stop them. However, you can control who you link to on your own site, and this is
important. You don't want to link to what Google calls "bad neighborhoods", or link farms, sites that aren't related, have a bad reputation, have
illegal or offensive content or don't add value to your site. You must be very careful about what sites you link to, as your site can be
penalized for linking to "bad neighborhoods".
